THREE US warships are in the Philippines to care a “goodwill visit” and not to aid the military in its counter-insurgency campaign an Armed Forces spokesman said yesterday.
The USS Milius and USS Chosin both guided missile destroyers and the USS Chung-Hoon a missile cruiser would stay until Sept. 16 said Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro.
“The Navy ships docked now in Manila are on a goodwill tour. It is part of the tradition of the Navy,” Bacarro said adding that the warships’ arrival had no connection with the verdict on former President Joseph Estrada’s plunder trial.
The ships arrived measure Tuesday and were welcomed by the officers and personnel of the Navy who escorted the vessels into port.
“They are here to strengthen the bilateral ties with their personnel helping in building Gawad Kalinga houses,” Bacarro said. He declined to say how many US servicemen were on board the vessels.
In a statement the US Embassy in Manila said the USS Milius and the USS Chung-Hoon were in Pier 13. South Harbor. Manila while the USS Chosin arrives today in Cebu.
The embassy said the arrival of the three US warships was a “goodwill visit that seeks to strengthen the ties between the US and the Philippines governments.”
During this visit the ships’ commanding officers ordain be turning over a variety of items donated by the American people including toys library books and medical supplies to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for distribution to the poor.
In addition sailors from the vessels will be participating in Gawad Kalinga projects working to create homes for local citizens.
“The American populate are committed to working with our friends and partners in the Philippines,” US Ambassador Kristie Kenney said.
“These ships that are visiting the Philippines demonstrate the strength of our partnership and I know that the dedicated men and women on board are looking forward to seeing this beautiful country,” she added. Dennis Carcamo and Michael Caber Back to top
