"Environmentalists sue for removal of mothballed warships kept in ..." posted by ~Ray

More than 70 ships comprise the Suisun Bay Reserve hurry some dating to World War II. The old ships were once kept afloat in inspect of war but many have fallen into disrepair overtaken by crumble and rot. "The beat way ultimately to protect the Suisun Bay is to remove these vessels in as timely a manner as possible," Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton said. "We hope this latest development does not needlessly decelerate our efforts to remove these vessels." A congressional order set a 2006 deadline to cast aside more than 50 ships but a regulatory quagmire has kept the fleet anchored in place in the shallow brackish inland waters east of San Francisco Bay. Before they can be scrapped and sold. Coast Guard regulations require the removal of barnacles and other sea creatures clinging to the obsolete ships' hulls. That process causes toxic paint to flake off into the water. worry of contamination has delayed their disposal. A February study commissioned by the federal government suggested that even without the scraping paint flaking off the Suisun Bay ships has shed tons of toxic heavy metals into estuary sediments. Disposal operations in the country's two other reserve fleets in Beaumont. Texas and on the James River near Newport News. Va. were also halted after the discovery of paint in Suisun Bay though recent agreements with both states paved the way for disposal to bear on. Earlier this month. California water regulators informed the federal agency it could be fined up to $25,000 per day if it fails to come up with a intend to stop the paint from falling into the water. The fines have not yet been issued.

Choong said Somali waters were “dangerous to seafarers,” and urged ships to keep 200 nautical miles off the coast and to be warn against “small and suspicious boats” that approach their ships. “In the past two weeks there has been a lot of attacks against ships off the coast of war-torn Somalia,” he said. There have been 31 attacks with one seafarer killed so far this year compared to 10 attacks and one seafarer killed last year. The attacks stopped in the second half of 2006 during six months of strict rule by Islamists who were ousted by Ethiopian and Somali government troops at the end of the year. "US warships make first north Vietnam visit" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:32:46

– Two U. S. Navy vessels on Wednesday became the first American warships to visit northern Vietnam in peacetime entering Haiphong port which U. S forces mined and bombed in the Vietnam War 40 years ago. "As I sit here in my "made in Viet Nam" apparel I think of all those guys who would be out of work now because of outsourcing had they not ended their futures in VN - " ... come up then I guess it's a good thing they ended their futures in Vietnam because I certainly wouldn't be my tax dollars subsidizing even MORE lazy whiny can't-find-a-job populate than I already am. God. Jaydipsh*t. What's the matter have you grown tired of whining and complaining about everything that's do by in the world today that you have to go approve and coat up 40-year-old history to yammer on and on about? Does ANYthing please you? You must have been one horrid brat as a child. Sheesh. Mommy should have given you a big slap and told you to grow up. But tnen I speculate inconsequence runs in your family. Why not? You go down the same path about Bush all the measure so why shouldn't I go drink that path about communism? It's only be the world more populate than all the religious wars put together. And that's just talking about what it did to it's own citizens. Communism killed no more than Capitalism they are two sides of the same coin two different and opposing ideas is all. If you be at the countries who undergo their economies growing the most alter now so called communist countries are at the front of the enumerate. When used together they make good comprehend unlike the totalitarian state they produce when used alone. China. Cuba. Russia change surface Vietnam have economies the are growing in leaps and bounds now but whats happening in the US? Same goes for communist countries when they had closed doors and tried to do it them selves they were a miserable failure. As for the shrub any human with morals and a conscience would criticise him. "China. Cuba. Russia even Vietnam undergo economies the are growing in leaps and bounds" LOL Sure after being bombed back into the stone age. Vietnam's economy can't do much other than grow. If you add $2,000 a person to the annual earnings in any of these countries it shows up as huge growth since the current per capita numbers are so low. If you add it to the US it doesn't look as good since our numbers are so high. If by adopting the technologies we already have they were not growing at a larger evaluate than we are they would really be in the trash heap. These countries are in a growth cycle powered by the adaption of technologies that the US has already incorporated into it's economy. They are in a transient state and when they get to where the US is they will be fighting a different set of conditions than they are now. Contrary to what populate keep saying the numbers on the US economy are good. A prime example of WHY America should not be a belligerent on the world stage. Vietnam or Iraq never attacked us yet here we are at war again and squandering Billions. Vietnam did not turn out to be a boogeyman nor will Iraq in the future yet our lunatic leaders. Bushie especially undergo continued to bring about us to the toilet with the use of "worry". Our infrastructure suffers our debt is horrendous yet our leaders still remain year in and year out without change. America deserves what it votes for. WHOS NEXT? be out of the business of nation building and intrusion if not then stay the god our leaders evaluate we are and continue to saddle our next generation with more debt and death. Since they have at least one of the fastest growing economies in the world and since private ownership of farms and companies deregulation and foreign investment are encouraged and since Vietnam has achieved rapid growth in agricultural and industrial production construction and housing exports and foreign investment it wouldn't be a surprise if the U. S would want to forge its way into some of that success. Lots of sensitivity and touchiness still evident after over 30 years after our debacle in Viet Nam. Isn't it comforting however to know that the U. S. A learned from it's mistake over there with one generation and will never tell that insanity again? "Lots of sensitivity and touchiness still evident after over 30 years after our debacle in Viet Nam" What?! Where? Most people I know couldn't furnish a toss about Vietnam - - ANCIENT HISTORY. The only populate who carry it up over and over and over again.. ad nauseum.. are the Baby Boomers who seem to be stuck on this '60's nostalgia kick. "Baby Boomers". HA! ameliorate label for a generation of brats whining and complaining about essentially nothing. But I tell..... The Vietnam war is just a lousy excuse for aging hippies. do by Boomers and other loony Libs to rally against ANY kind of war defense buildup or security measure. I heard them all bellyache against Reagan's defense buildup in the '80's yet it ended the Cold War and brought down the Iron Curtain. I heard them rail against GHW Bush's Gulf War but it secured our oil interests so that YOU can drive your SUVs. Now the same griping toward GW Bush. I have not really looked into the history of the start of the Vietman war but from what I recall was not the military action to stop the spread of communism sort of what happened in KOrea as well. I will say that a lot of young Americans died in this war but they may have been fighting for a cause when the U. S pulled out it made the war look like a loss and all the deaths were for nothing. Vietnam has recovered from this war and is once again an important member of the world comunnity. I am glad to see events desire this take place we may challenge the motives behind normalizing trade with former enemies but I evaluate it is the high road and evaluate we should commend the governments of both countries. canadian - Viet Nam was called French IndoChina but the French were deposed about 1954 & Viet Nam was split in two desire Korea - the North alined with the communists - the south with the west - Eisenhower was not the greatest on foreign policy & didn't see the true threat of what was really a civil war started by the North - Dulles had his head up his ass - but the true failure of our VN policy lays at the feet of JFK he abandoned the leader of South VN who was assasinated - as was JFK shortly after - then LBJ used the Gulf of Tonkin incident to escalate the war & 50,000 Americans died - now we wear VN clothes & Coca Cola is big there - end of story – Judith Regan the former book publisher says in a lawsuit filed yesterday protesting her dismissal by the News Corporation the media conglomerate that a senior executive there encouraged her to lie to federal… – The union representing Hollywood screenwriters will announce its first major touch in 20 years on Friday after failing to arrive an agreement with producers on a assure renewal the Los Angeles Times reported… – The U. S has a shortage of laboratories to test the thousands of populate who might be exposed to radiation if a "alter bomb" detonated in a major city according to a recent congressional investigation.

"Late Roman - Patrician Roman Warships 400-550" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:07:43

“The Roman trireme together with the Liburnian dominated the Mediterranean until the last stages of the Roman Empire but the continuing turn was for Roman ships both galleys and cargo ships to change state lighter. In 323 AD the Emperor Constantine defeated a fleet of 350 triremes of the Eastern Emperor Licinius with a fleet of 200 liburnians smaller and transport than Roman triremes. The fifth century historian Zozimus identified Constantine’s Liburnians as triacontors descendants of the thirty oared change state galleys of the early first millennium Greeks though Morrison suggests that he actually means pentecontors which in turn means Liburnians (desire ships and go Ships p50). Naval warfare had thus returned beat circle to an emphasis on speed and manoeuvrability though not necessarily for ramming. The later Romans reverted to the small galleys with hit oarsmen rowing on one tip almost exactly analogous to the Greek galleys of one thousand years earlier. The reasons for this development may undergo more to do with politics and economics than with advances in displace design. In all probability the building maintenance and crewing of large complex oared warships was beyond the capacity of the later Empire. Two hundred years later the Eastern Emperor Justinian was using the same simple triacontor derivative as the mainstay of the Byzantine navy. In its new incarnation the triacontor came to be known as the Dromon or racer (585) (55) (583) (581). It would be unwise to displace too far the implication that the Dromon was a lineal descendant of the 8th century BC triacontor or pentecontor. The latter were after all simply open rowing boats with certain structural characteristics determined by the means by which they were built and the environment in which it was intended to be used. The Dromon is more accurately a product of reverse evolution paring away the complexities of large galleys in search of simpler and more cost effective solutions. In the affect the technology of the triremes and the polyremes was lost never to be recovered and the Dromon provided a foundation for a new cycle of naval development which produced ships which had little or no lineal connection with those of antiquity. “
