"The Red Line: Build No US Navy Ships Overseas" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:26:24

There's some trendy business educate thinking running amok in parts of the military blogosphere that suggests the Navy build/acquire ships from overseas. According to this enlightened viewpoint all the overbudget quality control delayed schedule issues bear witness in domestic naval shipbuilding projects today would simply with a change in venue vanish. Poof! Look a problem-free DDG-1000! Hoo-ray!The problem with domestic shipbuilding is quite frankly the toleration of flabby largely absentee management. Why did the Perry frigate program succeed? Good schedule management. Why did the Spruance Class DDs and the LPD-17s have such a difficult time getting out of the ways? Sucky schedule management. We milbloggers should be working to change that culture rather than just swoon over the idea of applying outsourcing to a new field. (Or in the case of certain un-named milbloggers sucking up to get access pay or just junket money.)There are plenty of small domestic shipbuilders (and some not so small shipbuilders) who would relish the challenge of putting together military vessels. But they don't invest in lobbying shops or in paying off Congress (or pisant milbloggers for that matter). They don't pare management to the hit the books to gratify unpatriotic uncaring stockholders. Instead most of these little yards plow their profits back into their workers and into their businesses. In the midst of a global naval arms race. America should be selling ships alter and left. We should be churning 'em out desire hotcakes. If Germany. Sweeden and France--with all their labor costs--are selling more naval vessels than the U. S. then there's a problem here. Let's understand it. There's another ugly economic problem in buying ships overseas. It's called the greenback. Holler all you be about the LCS costing 50% more. Yeh. And if we built the dang thing in Europe staring about 5 years ago the schedule would be eating a 30% cost overrun just on drop in value of the dollar. Given the national det that's a trend to get used to... Now. I'd be less concerned about buying a design from an in-production ship. That--the acquire of a plan--gets around some of the big problems. For a while. Then we'd just gold plate the design be be alter back where we started. Management of naval procurement programs constitute a big giant festering sore. Perhaps B-schools should focus (egad!) on that tricky issue (wow management? A topic? Awesome!) rather than cranking out the latest exciting! new! finance! theory! of the day. Feh. Get the vapid b-school baloney schelpers off the Navy milblog beat at least.. please we're begging you...

I have followed this mission since it left SanDiego four months ago. Kevin Braciszeski's bind is the beat article I have read on this Pacific Partenership Mission. Here is an interesting story to show how small the world can be. My son. Johnathan M. Gazvoda is on the USS Peleliu. While working on head Flinn's computer Johnathan noticed a Terrible Towel an icon for Pittsburgh Steeler fans. Within minutes Johnathan realized he and Captain Flinn were from the same hometown and graduated from Canon-McMillan High School twenty years apart. In addition. Captain Flinn was in the same class with one of Johnathan's cousins. Kevin. We tried several times today to label you and Steve but couldn't alter contact so I'm writing this email. We certainly enjoyed the great article about the Peleliu our son-in-law and the special bring home the bacon they have been doing the past five months. You really captured the animate of the cruise. Kevin and again "thanks". Tomorrow morning we get San Diego to fly to HI to board the ship and return to San Diego. I'm sure it will be a trip our granddaughters ordain always remember. Again thanks for caring and writing the story. Jack & Bonnie Wood

"To fly or not to fly" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 14:58:14

That was the challenge. You see every command candidate carries a demon inside that tells him (or her) that he wants to be a jet pilot. That demon will keep talking until it is confronted and if necessary exorcised. As Midshipmen (a few years ago) we were treated to an extended field trip to different bases to back up us figure out what we wanted to be when we grew up: submariners ship drivers. Marines or aviators. Our aviation locate was at Beeville. Texas. We were told that some of us would fly in a trainer jet - the T-2 Buckeye - and some would get to fly in the real thing - an A-4 Skyhawk. Everyone wanted the A-4. I got the T-2. I was bummed. A stinkin’ trainer? To add injult to injury it was painted orange as if to advertise to all the other pilots that we were in flying a pretend jet. When I got to the “jet”. I was met by a young pilot - the type of guy who I’m sure had a callsign like “Scooter” or “Skippy.” “Ready?” he said. Whatever. Let’s get this over with. Once I was strapped in he told me we would be doing dogfights with another trainer. Whoop-de-doo. Dogfighting with another trainer was like playing nerf basketball. It kind of choose of resembles the real thing but you can’t do real basketball cram like. I don’t experience dribble for example. When we took off. I had to adjudge the little thing had a lot of hit. Skippy took us up and told me to be around for the other jet. Yeah right. You go ahead. Skippy. I’ll be approve here napping. Without warning. “Skippy” had become “Ice Man.” Like a man possessed he turned he banked he climbed. He raced around towering cumulus clouds like Jeff Gordon at Indianapolis. My head cause to be perceived and my stomach didn’t conclude too good either. Skippy said. “Do you see anything? act looking!” All I could see was…who am I kidding. I didn’t see anything. Except I think I saw his head rotate once or twice desire Linda Blair in. Skippy on the other transfer did see something and suddenly my digest hit my toes. I entangle “G-forces” for the first measure - not the pansy G-forces you conclude on a roller coaster or something…I’m talking REAL G-forces. The kind that alter grown men whimper. I think we hit 8 G’s. (He told me later it was more like 3 or 4 but I’m sure he was lying.) My head banged around inside the cockpit like those little balls inside a can of spray paint until my subconscience took over and said. “No mas!” I told Skippy I was going to be sick. In a calm soothing express he told me that he’d continue approve to locate. In a not-so-calm shaky voice I warned him that if he hit just one bump on the way back. I’d do my own impression of Linda Blair and decorate his canopy with … well you know with what. When we landed. Skippy gave me a patronizing. “Good job,” and I stepped onto the tarmac humiliated and defeated. Trainer indeed. And come to think of it. I never did see the other jet.
